Your class’ grid art is very cool Mr. Toft. A new teacher to our school did this with her 5/6 class earlier this year, but I had never seen them before. I’m definitely going to try them later. Did any of your students find it tough to make sure the alternate pattern of the grid continued? Especially with those rounded letters like d, a, b, and o because they could take up a whole square and I could see that interfering with the pattern you needed to match between left and right and up and down.
I love the way this video pulls apart the layers of colours in the transitions from image to image. What program did you use to create this before you uploaded it to Vimeo?
Thanks for your kind words, Mrs. Braidwood. Mrs. McCosham is a student teacher in my class and is full of excellent ideas like this one. The students did find aspects of the activity tough – especially the amount of time it took complete, but the vast majority of them persevered.
I think Mrs. McCosham used the equivalent of Photo Story on her MacBook. Being a nonMac type, I’m not sure. I’ll ask her to chime in.
P.S. Thanks for getting your students to leave comments on our blog so regularly. We’ll do our best to continue returning the favour.
Hi I’m Celina from Mrs. Braidwood’s class. I love your artwork! I did something like this last year but it was straight lines not chekers. Art is my favourite subject. I think art let’s you express yourself.
What do you think about art?
Hello I’m Josee from Mrs. Braidwood’s class. I just think that the video was really cool. The music matched the crazy colours, but it was kind of hard to read the names. I remember last year our class did something like that with our names. How long did it take to make these?
Hello I’m Kaylee from Mrs Braidwood’s class. I’m in grade 6. I think your class’s grid art is really cool! I did something like that in grade five. The hand ones were great. I like the way the video put the two pieces together like a sandwich. I would like to do these some time. Did your class find it hard to make?
Hey! I’m Ryan from Mrs. Braidwood’s class. That is very cool! I think I’ve seen something like this in YouTube before. There was one picture I couldn’t identify, the fifth one I believe, what was it? A name? People? It was hard for me.
Hello Mr.Toft my name is Gregory from Mrs.Braidwood’s class. That grid art was very creative that your class made. I have a question, how did you make the grid art anyway?
The idea is fairly simple. You start with some grid paper, trace an object like your hand on it with pencil. Then you choose a colour or two to make a checkerboard pattern. But, when you are inside the object you traced, you reverse the pattern. Depending on what object you have, this can be fairly straight forward or quite complicated!
Hi I’m Kyra from Mrs. Braidwood’s class.
Your class’ grid art is very neat and colourful. I would like to do some grid art like that but I think our class is doing them. How do you come up with the designs?
Hi Mr. Toft!
My name is Kaley and I’m in Mrs. Braidwood’s class. I’m in grade 7. WOW… that art is pretty cool! I remember doing something like that because my sister showed me how to do it!
Hello. I’m Eli from Mrs.Braidwood’s class. I love the work your class has done. It is really amazing art. I have a question about the 5th picture, what is it?
Hello. I’m Connor from Mrs.Briadwood’s class. I think this is very cool. I definitly like how easy it is to see the shapes and hard it is to tell how you see them. I’m having a little trouble seeing what the 5th picture is. What is it?
Hi my name is Gavin and I’m in Mrs. Braidwood’s grade six/seven class. I think your art is awesome. I hope we do it in our class. I really like the one that says Linda and all the other ones. How long did it take to make that art?
Hi my name is Aiden and I’m in Mrs. Braidwood’s class. I think grid art sounds and looks like a lot of fun. I did it in grade five. It takes a long time to finish a one of those. My favourite colours to do in a grid art are light green and light blue. What is your favourite colour?
Hi Mr Toft’s class I’m Dakota in Mrs Braidwood’s class.
You guys did such a great job! That was really cool art. Right now we are printmaking in art.
Hopefully you will be able to post more art on your blog!
Hi, I’m Sandunya. I am one of the kids in Mr.Toft’s class. Thanks for all your great comments! I think the way our students teacher, Mrs. Mccosham, showed the art on the video. Me, Naana, and Abinaya were AMAZED! (these are my best friends at school). See you!
